The 2012 summer term, art and elementary education pre-service and in-service teachers traveled to Los Angeles, California to visit the classroom of Rafe Esquith and his Hobart Shakespeareans perform Measure for Measure in his classroom 56. Rafe is a 5th grade teacher and the author of Teach Like Your Hair is On Fire.
While in LA, the teachers also visited the Getty Museum, Getty Villa, The Autry Center for Native American Art and Culture, and participated in the Native American story telling workshop by the Navajo story teller, Geri Keams. The musical play read, Distant Thunder, performed on the final evening at the Autry Center featured an inspiring story of contemporary Native American youth living on the reservation. The Study Away teachers actively participated in the talking back session after the play and made a lasting WKU impression for the cast members and the audience as well.
